Abstrakt

The assignment of numbers to identify spaces can be traced back at least to early modern history: Houses, rooms and even hospital beds were numbered in order to administer and rule people; most often the cultural technique of numbering was used for police or state purposes but there are also examples of employing it for anticapitalist aims. The historian Anton Tantner documents in this contribution some of the ways, numbers were and are used in history and present.
