Tadeáš Kadlec (Prag/Praha): The Gartenpalais of Hermann Jakob Czernin von Chudenitz in Leopoldstadt: Reflections on a Lost Structure by Giovanni Battista Maderna
Moderation: Friedrich Polleroß
PRÄSENZVERANSTALTUNG
Abstract:
The Czernin garden palace in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt, designed by Giovanni Battista Maderna, has not survived, yet its form is preserved in a remarkable set of drawings held in the Czernin archive. The lecture aims to situate the building within the context of contemporary architecture in Vienna and Bohemia. Likely inspired primarily by the works of Jean-Baptiste Mathey, Maderna’s project may be seen as an instance of a Bohemian artistic contribution abroad. A rich body of archival sources also provides for a closer investigation of the planning and construction process, shedding new light on the role of Hermann Jakob Czernin as a patron of architecture.
