Sandra Hirsch (Timişoara): Townspeople, Public Space and Daily Life in Early Modern Timişoara (1716–1740)

Abstract:
Timișoara, the most important settlement of historical Banat, went through several changes after the Habsburg troops besieged it in 1716, including its transformation from being the capital of an Ottoman vilayet into a central European baroque town. This presentation builds on original archival research related to citizens, markets, shops, grocery stores, barracks, lazarettes, places of worship, pubs, etc. to provide an insight into the daily practices, activities and lifestyles of people living in early modern Timișoara. By tracing continuity and change within Timișoara’s diverse urban society between 1716 and 1740, this research reveals untold stories of several individuals and their role in the development of the town. In so doing, this study contributes to a micro historical and social perspective on the urban public space in the first decades of the 18th Century. Dr.in Sandra Hirsch holds a PhD in History from Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She is currently working as a Research Associate at West University of Timişoara, Romania. Her research interests focus on early modern history – 18th Century, the history of Banat and Timişoara, urban history, historical public houses, material culture, history of medicine, and history of everyday life.
